The University of Hawaii kept its postseason hopes alive, and now it’s fate will be decided on the final day of the volleyball regular season.
The Warriors still don’t control their destiny, but they got a step closer to their desired destination with a 25-20, 15-25, 25-21, 25-23 victory against Cal San Diego on Friday night in La Jolla, Calif.
Hawaii (10-16, 9-14 Mountain Pacific Sports Federation) needs another win in a 4 p.m. HST match today against the Tritons (7-21, 4-19) coupled with a Cal Northridge loss at No. 2 Long Beach State to qualify as the eighth seed in the league playoffs.
Playing without outside hitters Sinisa Zarkovic and JP Marks, opposite Brook Sedore put down a match-high 19 kills and middle blockers Taylor Averill (13 kills, .706 hitting) and Davis Holt (nine, .615) were uber-efficient as UH hit .254.
The decisive set was last tied at 17-17, but but outside hitter Jace Olsen and Averill each smacked two kills to put away the Tritons, who hit. 255.
Carl Eberts compiled 13 kills for Cal San Diego.
